Oliva & the Costa Azahar

 

Oliva is a town of about 21,000 people situated in the Valencia region of Spain just north of the Costa Blanca. This is in the heart of the orange growing area and the town is surrounded by acres of orange groves which perfume the air with the delicate smell of orange blossom in the springtime.

 

The old town is a labyrinth of narrow streets lined with white washed Spanish town houses. A walk around the town will bring you to gardens, fountains and monuments as well as some fabulous architecture and the beautiful blue domed churches of St. Roc and Sta. Ana.

The beach is a 20 minute walk away, but the Olibus will take you there quickly. This service runs from the Paseo every half-hour Kilometres of golden, blue-flag, sunny beachesduring the summer months. Oliva’s fine sandy beach is over 10 km long and is backed by natural dunes. This beautiful, unspoilt beach is a great place to spend the day with safe bathing and numerous Spanish restaurants and bars for a fine and inexpensive lunch.

At one end of the beach is the Club Nautica which offers moorings to ships and boats as well as sailing courses. There are numerous sporting activities to enjoy inWindsurfing on Oliva beach. Oliva including windsurfing, horse riding, fishing, cycling and go-karting and the town has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool which is open until 10pm. if you fancy a change from the beach.

 

Oliva is a beautiful Spanish town which can provide a wonderful holiday for all members of the family to enjoy.

 

In the centre of the town is the Paseo, a wide, tree lined avenue which hosts the weekly Friday market where you can buy clothes and gifts as well as a vast array of locallyA place to cool off. The Paseo. produced fruit and vegetables. The Paseo has a children’s park and is surrounded by shops, bars and restaurants. The Paseo is the place to go to relax and cool off in the heat of the day. There is a fantastic funfair held here in the month of June each year.

Restaurants and Bars
There are numerous Spanish and English bars and restaurants in Oliva serving a wide variety of dishes and tapas. Listed below are some of the places you may wish to visit.

 

Restaurants
Fuegos.
A recently opened restaurant situated right at the end of the Paseo on the Denia side of town. There is a wide choice of dishes on the menu and on Wednesday night there is an all inclusive buffet on an international theme including Indian, Italian and Caribbean food. There is a full a la carte menu and also a traditional English Sunday lunch.
Fintels. An English owned restaurant situated just off the main N332 in the centre of town specialising in a wide variety of fish dishes as well as a full a la carte menu with a good variety of vegetarian dishes. You can also get a good English roast dinner on Sunday.

Viva Espana. A large Spanish restaurant situated on the outskirts of Oliva on the Gandia side of town. Here you can enjoy a 5-course meal with a traditional Flamenco show on Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday lunchtime.
El Lloc. A good Spanish restaurant situated in the Paseo with outdoor seating where you can enjoy pizzas, pasta and a variety of meat and fish dishes.
La Rustica. A Spanish pizza restaurant situated on the N332 where you can enjoy fantastic and very reasonably priced pizzas freshly baked in a traditional wood burning oven.

La Vaca. Situated at the very end of the Paseo. Good food and live music at the weekend.

Check out any of the three Chinese restaurants in the town for a good value meal. The Hong Kong and Hai Jing in the Paseo and Susannas on the N332 on the Gandia side of town.

Bars
The Sportsman. Situated in the Paseo. Extensive coverage of most live sporting events including Premiership football, rugby, cricket, tennis and golf. Pool table and games machines. Quiz night weekly. Tetley’s and Guinness on draught.
Sherlock Holmes. Situated near the children’s park just off the Paseo. A lively run Spanish bar with outside seating where you can also enjoy a good basic meal. Live Spanish and English football on TV.
Dr. Watson’s. English run bar close to the Town Hall. Good outside seating. Pool table.

La Placa. Spanish bar situated in the beautiful San Roque square in the heart of the old town.
Amigos. English run bar with pool table and Internet Access. Also situated in San Roque square.
 

 

There are also several bars situated in the Paseo where you can sit outside and watch the world go by. Plus there are also many other bars throughout the town where you can enjoy traditional Spanish tapas.


The beach area has numerous bars and restaurants and in the Summer you can also enjoy the Xiringuitos (Spanish beach bars) which are open 24 hours a day and are at their most lively from 3am onwards. Here you can enjoy live DJs and stay all night until the sun comes up, if you have the stamina.

 

 

Towns and Places of Interest

 

Gandia. 10 kms north of Oliva between the coast and mountains in the heart of La Safor region. Its rich cultural heritage can be seen in its Gandia.many monuments and historic buildings such as the Ducal Palace, The Golden Gallery, The Hall of Crowns ad The Plaza Mayor, a civic, administrative, commercial and religious centre. Beaches at Gandia are excellent with a Blue Flag awarded at Playa Nord. The town also plans to extend its yacht marina in preparation for the 2007 Americas Cup.

Oliva – Pego Nature Park. This is a large marshland area with an abundance of flora and fauna of natural beauty. Within the park is a spring of sulphurous mineral waters known as La Font Salada. Pego Nature ParkThe temperature of the thermal water enables both summer and winter bathing and is recommended for its healing properties. There are also underwater springs known as Los Ullals which are another attraction within the park.

Guadalest. About 30 minutes drive inland will bring you to the breathtaking mountain region which lies behind Oliva. Here you will find the fantastic hill fortress of Guadalest with its wonderful array of narrow passages and interesting gift shops. The views from the fortress are unrivalled in this region of Spain andGuadalest the Guadalest Valley is one of the most beautiful in the province. It is sheltered by high mountains and dramatic peaks which have created a microclimate where a wide range of fruit trees are grown. Oranges, lumquats, almonds and olives line the valley which becomes a sea of pink blossoms in the early springtime.

Fonts D’Algar. Returning towards the coast you will come to a series of crystal clear cascades and falls where you can bathe or enjoy a walk along the waterside pathways.


Pedreguer and La Nucia. Every Sunday both these towns hold what are known as “Rastros”, the equivalent of the traditional English car boot sale. A must for all you bargain hunters!


Valencia. 75 kms to the north of Oliva on the A7 motorway or the Spanish national Ciudad de Las Artes y Las Ciencias, Valenciaroad the N332. Here you can visit the modern Ciudad de Las Artes y Las Ciencias with its fabulous L’Oceanografic sea world. See Links Page for more detailed information.

Denia. Has many shops, bars and restaurants as well as being the closest town to Oliva from where you can take a train as far south as Alicante. There are many stops at Denia harbour.coastal towns such as Altea, Calpe and Villajoyosa as well as Benidorm if you prefer a livelier environment. There is also a port at Denia which has several ferry services to the island of Ibiza.
Javea. This is also a busy town with a lively bay area known as The Arenal. Here you can find many bars and restaurants close to the waters edge surrounded by a beautiful beach.

 

El VergEl Vergel Safari Park.el Safari Park. Enjoy a new sensation seeing the lions and tigers in complete freedom. Come on a safari and admire the leopards, jaguars, Iberian wolves, primates and hundreds of totally free animals. Various attractions include karts, trampolines, boats, Congo train, horses and an exotic ride on a camel.

 

Benidorm

Benidorm. Is about a half-hour’s drive away to the south of Oliva. Here you will find Aqualandia, the biggest aquapark in the region with a wide selection of rides, slides, waves and pools. Mundomar is a marine park with a dolphin show and located just outside Benidorm is the famous Terra Mitica, the fantastic theme park which is the largest in the Mediterranean.
